I was invited to perform on NTV The Beat with host Douglas Lwanga. It was surreal to see the music video for “Conclusions” be premiered on national television in Uganda. That video is a very homy little thing that I made in my house with my friends in Delaware. It was a true honor to play a few of my music videos and a few live songs.

In the months that elapsed from when I booked the gig at Arkadia to when I would be arriving, the booking agent left the venue…without transferring all the bookings on the calendar to the new crew. I sent a check-in message a little bit before the show. They wrote back, surprised. An open mic was scheduled for the evening, so they penciled in some time for me to feature. It was a great venue with nice and attentive folks. The talent in the room was unreal, and I wouldn’t have that evening any other way.

Photo by Em M. Our show for Feb 20 had been cancelled due to legal trouble with the establishment. We had already made the multiple-day trek to Koh Chang for the gig. We dicided not to be too upset about the cancellation, because after all, we were still on an island in the Sun in Thailand. Through a connection, someone set up a show for us in the heart of the night district at Lonely Beach in the Reggae Bar, with two days notice. This was a really cool place, full of great people. They paid us in booze, which was dangeresk, as we had driven ourselves to the show on motorbikes.

My photo. Bagan is a magical place. A good part of the audience at the Hti Bar were hot air balloon pilots. I played for nearly four hours, and ended up improving a few songs about floating over the earth. After mounting a motorbike and tracing the winding way back to my place, I slept for a couple hours and then drove across the countryside on the motorbike watching the air balloons overhead in the sunrise.

They said it was cooler to play outside than in an establishment. We just played by the water, and people listened as the shadows around us lengthened. Is this is a show? I don’t think so, and I don’t care. I spent a few days in the area, playing songs in people’s houses, and not caring what a concert was.

This is Marc Rogers. He has been a DJ at WSTW and supporter of local music for a long time. He is an integral part of our local community. I know that a radio broadcast is not a concert, per se, but I wanted to include this entry to highlight the man, the myth, the legend.

Photo by Alyssa R. DBMC was really fun. We shared the stage with a bajillion talented musicians from all over. There was plenty of time to appreciate each other’s noise. There were schmoose&booze times with free food and drinks. We also gave the sound man an opportunity to mix lots of small, strange acoustic instruments along with a full drumset. This event was soon after I had broken my T7 vertebrae. I was supposed to be on rest, but I wanted to play music. Having so many Diner Club friends together, we rocked too hard, and I got too in to it, bending my back too much. Perhaps not a good life decision for my physiology, but oh the memories from that weekend!

I found it ironic that my back was busted, and my most popular jam at the time was called, “back.” Anyhow, this was a pretty legit festival in one of my favorite areas of the world. They had a massage table set up. I got one–the only one I had ever had. It’s strange trying to think about photographs. The fellow pictured on the right was an integral part of the Delmarpa arts scene for years. He is dead now.

People had nicknamed our band “The Woodchuck Chuckers,” and kept bringing my Woodchuck Ciders all night. This helped with the short-term pain….perhaps not my long-term recovery. I wouldn’t carry a guitar, and wouldn’t bend my back. But, standing as still as I could, my brother handed me a guitar, and I played as best I could.

Uncle Bob’s Chicken Dystopia

Photo by Harry A. This was not a concert, per se, but it was an all-day music jam and a notable life event. Kevin Natrin there can play just about any old folk song. We had a porch jam all day and a little concert shindig on the lawn that evening. Sometime early on, I broke my T7 vertebrae while playing a game of pickup soccer. It was not even a real game. And my glorious move did not turn out to be so glorious, but it did turn out to be memorable. With my back hurting like the dickens all day, I sat around on the porch, laid around in the yard, and imbibed some depressants to offset the pain. We had a good ol’ time jamming. After a week of persistent pain, I went to the doc and had them shoot some radiation in me with their fancy Xray machine. Yep, I was sure busted. Good times on Uncle Bob’s chicken farm.

Photo by unknown–probably Michael C. or Momma Palko. The Troc is a magical venue. I skipped my high school graduation to play drums for a rock n’ roll show there back in the day. I wore my graduation cap out on stage. My brothers were the righty and lefty guitarists on either side of the stage. After the first song, they switched my tassel, and I tossed my cap. That was it, I had graduated into the world of music. So, returning to the Troc years later was surreal. The soundman kindly recorded our set, and I released it as a tour fundraiser the following winter. You can find it here on iTunes, or search it up anywhere else that music lives on the internet.

Em and Matt and I recorded an album called, “Snow Day.” It was really a cool collaboration. I think we pondered making a more exclusive trio of the three of us, but then they kicked me out. I guess I wasn’t cool enough at music yet. Oh well. Anyhow, I played the drums for Alyssa’s album. She has this gnarly song called “Robot Lover” that has way too many time-signatures in it. It is brilliant, and you can check out the music video for it here.
